Working with Isometric's Biochar Protocol ensures certificates are only issued when carbon dioxide has been durably removed from the atmosphere—creating confidence for buyers and suppliers.

What’s in the protocol

Durability

Cutting edge scientific research shows that biochar can store carbon dioxide for more than 1,000 years. Until now, suppliers could only issue biochar credits for 100 year timeframes.

Under the Isometric Biochar Protocol, suppliers can choose the durability of credits they issue.

Certificates issued for 200 year durability must use H/C_organic measurements and projected decay curves
Certificates issued for 1,000 year durability must use Random Reflectance (R₀) measurements to quantify the fraction of inertinite biochar

The Isometric Biochar Protocol is the first and only protocol on the market to allow for biochar certificates to be issued with a durability of 1,000 years.

Storage

There are several storage options for biochar produced via pyrolysis. Isometric’s protocol can verify projects where biochar is stored in:

Agricultural soils
Low-oxygen burial environments
Built materials (coming soon)
